We act for public corporations, local authorities, police forces, independent operators and local residents before licensing committees and Magistrates’ courts throughout England and Wales, as well as in High Court appeals by way of case stated and Judicial Review.

Our barristers have been involved in some of the leading licensing and enforcement cases. Recent High Court matters include the interpretation of the Licensing Act 2003, the criminal liability of licence holders, the relationship between case stated/Judicial Review, the validity of taxi regulations, and the licensing of sexual entertainment venues.

We frequently provide speakers at regional and national conferences, as well as delivering training for licensing authorities and others. Articles and notes are regularly published on licensing and enforcement topics.

The Licensing team is fully aware of the commercial concerns affecting all parties, whether corporate, private or public. This is reflected in the advice and approaches suggested by barristers and by our experienced clerking team on agreeing costs, where possible, with clients at the outset.

All our team members can accept instructions direct from industry professionals under the Licensed Access scheme. This allows members of licensed organisations, such as the RICS, to instruct us without having to go through a solicitor.

Public Access

Some members of the team are also available to act, where appropriate, for members of the public, as well as commercial and non-commercial organisations, under the Public Access scheme. Read more.

The team delivers workshops and seminars in Chambers and regional centres. We also provide training on behalf of local Law Societies and in conjunction with firms of solicitors and also councils.
